Over the last few weeks I’ve been seeing more and more updates on Facebook where people are moving turtles out of busy roads. Some turtles realize their errors and calmly let the caring drivers move them. Others begin the bite and side claw fury of death. The bottom line is that if you’re a turtle, stop.
It isn’t worth it. I get it. For years you’ve watched my fellow humans make turtle soup. We’ve even glorified the slaughter of your kind by featuring it in videos on TV shows. Some of your kind may even “claim” that we’re encouraging our youth to dip you in nuclear waste or chemicals so that you can become mutant fighting machines. I get it, you’re pissed, but it isn’t worth it. We know, you’re in a dark place and not just your shell.
For years humans have been turning your shells into ashtrays. But for every ashtray you’ve become, many more humans have suffered from the cigarettes. That should at least give you some peace knowing that your brethren paid dearly but also got some revenge. I get it, you’re pissed and you have every right to be. We take your photos on beaches, we swim in your nests while you’re trying to mate and we leave fishing lines in your water that can get tangled and hurt you. But that isn’t everyone and it isn’t worth the risk.
I know you’ve been watching the popular video game series where turtle shells take out cars, but that is only a video game. Your fellow tank turtles need to stop feeding you false information. Your shell will not wipe out a car and you will die. Turtlecide is not ok and not an answer. Think about the turtle babies you’re abandoning because the “tankers” told you what they saw on a screen can happen in real life. Have you ever seen a turtle on a shell-i-cide mission come back without a friendly human helping them out of the road? No, because it won’t work.
Instead try building better human – amphibian relations. Swim with us, not against us. Graze in the fields and pose for photos (but make sure to ask for royalties). Donate the profit to help conserve your lands and we can all begin to live in peace as a master turtle human race. Turtlecide is not the answer and thinking you can take on a moving car won’t work. Please stop before it’s too late. No more turtle will have to harm themselves. Donate to a local park today and help create land to stop turtlecide everywhere.
