Cork DC – Cork DC Wine Bars Reviewed

Now if you remember Washington DC about 10 years ago, 14th Street and Logan Circle were in the ghetto.  Not only was it a dangerous area, but it was dilapidated and completely disgusting to walk through.  It is amazing what a few years can do to an area.

Now apartments in Logan Circle range from the 1,300 per month to 3,000 per month and the nightlife of Logan Circle is booming for both straight people and gays.  There are thriving restaraunts, nice grocery stores like wholefoods and fun pubs like Stoney’s, Logan Tavern and Commissionary with great bar food and nightlife.  We even have Halo (which renamed itself to another name recently even though I still hate it there) which is DCs only completel dedicated Gay Lounge (You could argue 30 degrees lounge, etc… but I still consider that part of Cobalt).  Anyways, with the springing up of new restaraunts and trendy places to eat and things to do in Logan circle popped up a wine bar named Cork DC.

I went to Cork DC (Cork Wine Bar DC) the other day with my friend for his birthday and I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed.   The overall experience was absolutely fantastic, but there were a few issues I had with Cork DC and their Staff.  Lets start with the bad and end with the good.

I walked in and I was a bit earlier than my friend.  When I came in I was ignored by the (what I want to say is b*tch) greeter at the door with reservations.   I stood there for 5 minutes staring before she even said can I help you.  After being ignored, even after asking a question I said screw it and walked up to the bar.  Sorry but she was a real b*tch.  When I went to ask if we could get a table she gave us an attitude as well and instead of saying something friendly or even a hello, she said “Are you eating” not are you going to be having dinner, will you be ordering food, something polite, not “Are you eating?” and when we said no we were just having wine she told us no.  She also said tables are for guests eating sit at the bar.  She should have said “I’m sorry but the tables are reserved for guests who are having dinner with us, however you are more than welcome to enjoy your wine at the bar where we have appetizers (Always push an upsell or crossell) and a full selection of (ramble on for a second and smile).  The apologize and let the guests go back to the bar.  Cork had very poor service when it comes to their greeters and I highly encourage you all to complain if you end up getting that same rude b*tch at the front door of Cork Wine Bar DC.  Anyways, that was the majority of the bad with Cork Wine Bar in Washington DC.

Now for the good with Cork Wine Bar in Washington DC.

The wine selection was absolutely fabulous. Their wine menu was broken down by whites, then roses, then reds.  It also then sorts by which country the wine came from.  I wish they took it a step further and went by the sugar scale or region or varietal but hey, not everyone can be that OCD.  =0).  I stuck with the White Wines at Cork and after I realized I had about 4 glasses I thought that I should have done a flight (a three glass wine pairing that they set up across a piece of paper for you to have 3 smaller sized glasses of which ever wine color or varietal you choose).  Although the flight wouldn’t have been as satisfying as the full 4 glasses I had, maybe it would have helped me and my friends walk out of their a bit easier.

The bar tender was absolutely amazing.  not only did he joke with us, but he helped us find the perfect pairings for our tastes, describe each wine thoroughly and when we would ask for a particular kind that was on the menu and they were out of it, he knew a great substitute for it.  The bar staff at Cork Wine Bar DC is absolutely wonderful.

Not only did the Bar Staff at Cork DC know the entire selection and menu by heart and by number, they also were smart, could learn people’s pallets very fast and make perfect recommendations, but they also knew how to joke, have fun and really upsell and cross sell the menu.  Heck they got me to pay for these horrible home marinated olives.  To be fair though the olives looked amazing, but unfortunately their marinade took all the flavor out and they just tasted like olives soaked in olive oil.  No spice, seasoning, flavor etc…  Even the Kalamata Olives were bland which is very rare considering kalamata olives are normally extremely potent.

Overall I would give Cork DC 4 out of 5 Stars but only because of the wine selection and the very friendly and knowledgeable  bar staff.  The food gets a 1 out of 5 stars based on the olives and reactions I saw from other people eating.  No one was like wow on their first bite and no one I talked to really went crazy over the food.  I wish I could give a zero out of five stars but unfortunately one is the lowest number based on the front door staff.

Cork is a very fun and friendly atmosphere (Once you get past the b*tch at the door) and perfect for an anniversary, if you need something to do before dinner.  For a cocktail party or social networking event or even just for a girls night out with your friends.  It is gay friendly and straight friendly and a perfect evening out.  I will definitely be back to Cork Wine Bar DC and if the horrible b*tch greeter is there, I’ll definitely complain this time.  Cork DC is a must if you like Wine Bars and are in Washington DC.

Gourmet Mushrooms, Truffles and Food Wedding Gifts

This is an absolutely fabulous and amazing mix of mushrooms.

The mixed mushroom appetizer is made of Porcini, Muschio, Champignon and Chiodini mushrooms which all come blended in an extra virgin olive oil with salt and a bit of wine vinegar.  This sounds absolutely fabulous and amazing.  The problem is that if for some reason I bought this for myself I would end up eating it out of the jar instead of actually preparing it for a meal or appetizer.

I have been cooking a lot lately and one thing I have been using more and more are mushrooms.  I think it started because I’ve fallen in love with truffles and Italian cooking.

Most mushrooms are completely tasteless, but when you get into some of the more expensive ones like the shitake mushrooms and portebellas, you can really start to work with their textures and infuse them with some incredible flavors and prepare them in a million different ways.

One thing I have started doing is marinating portabellas for 48 hours and then grilling them using an italian marinade with some taragon and other flavors and then I spray them with (well more like I pour a lite coating) olive oil and then pepper them and slice them and serve them on a salad and with my shitake mushrooms I cook them right in the sauce I am preparing.

Not only does it seem like the shitake mushrooms suck up all of the flavors of the sauce, but they give this amazing texture that really brings out the meat and other vegetables in the meal I am preparing.

Anyways, I haven’t mentioned this one gourmet foods gift shop that I used to love and my friend used to be partnered with and so when I went looking for food tonight and because my mushrooms have only been marinating for 24 hours, I decided to look around for prepared mushrooms, gourmet mushrooms and mushroom infused oils like a truffle mushroom oil for you to use to really flavor your meals.  I love white and black truffle mushroom oils and if you have tasted a pasta prepared correctly with one you will completely never go back to having pasta without a truffle oil on it again.   They are expensive but they are completely worth it and if you buy a mushroom truffle oil for someone for their wedding they will definitely thank you when they finally use it.

Best Man Wedding Speeches – Last Minute Speeches

So something that people are always honored to get to do, but then when reality kicks in and the person realizes they are not prepared or that it really takes a bit of skill to do is is deliver a wedding speech.  Whether you prepare it the same day you are asked to make the wedding speech or you forget to write it and all of the sudden the wedding is tomorrow, there is another solution.

I came across a site and have been talking to the Marketing Department of a company called Instant Wedding Toasts.  Instant Wedding Toasts features tons of wedding speeches available instantly and last minute for those of us who forget to write our own or get stuck with writers  block.

I know that when I have had to write best man wedding speeches and I do them to early I 1.  Miss out on important and really funny things to rip the bride and groom apart with and 2.  Always second and triple guess what I wrote for the couple so I always recommend that if you are giving a best man wedding speech or Best Man wedding toast to the bride and groom you don’t do it too early so you can include all those last minute embarrassing and funny stories but you also don’t second guess what you were going to or wanted to say and end up scrapping the entire best man wedding speech.

I want to start by saying what an honor it was when Frankie asked me to be his best man. Which now also gives me the opportunity to toast two of my most favorite people in the world. But also, as a result of his mistake, I’ve got a microphone in my hand!

But before I begin telling you even more about Frankie, I would like to say a few words about the lovely bride. Lindsay, you look absolutely beautiful today. Since meeting you a few years ago it is clear to me why Frankie has fallen in love with you. You have a wonderful personality, a great sense of humor and a huge heart. It is an honor to be welcoming such a special person into our family.

I was actually having some trouble when I started to write this speech. I was drawing a blank on memories I had with Frankie. To be honest, I can’t remember half of them…and the other half I’m trying to forget!

Varla Jean Merman Loves Lots of Things

I got an email from a friend today and all it was was a quote.

“You know you’re in love when you don’t want to fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”

This quote was like holy crap.  That is amazing and completely true.  I don’t think it just applies to love with a person though.  If you love a trip or vacation, love your new job, love your new pet or even love your new body if you have been going to the gym or the new outfit you get to wear to the white party this spring and summer you know what this quote is talking about.

When things are going really well for you, sometimes sleep isn’t neccesary and sometimes you would rather stay awake because everything is going so well for you.   Oddly enough though, this quote came from an extremely unexpected source, it came from Dr.  Suess.

He came up with things like One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish (That was for you lesbians), and tons of our favorite childhood stories and characters like the Grinch or the Cat in the Hat.  Everyone knew he was a genius but who knew he could come up with a quote like the one above.

This quote is amazing and insane and completely a way to really think about love and if you are in love.  Staying with my Varla Jean Merman theme for this week, I was watching a commercial for things she loves in the commercial, (I cannot actually say she loves these things in real life, but it does look like she loves them in the commercial.  If you want to know if she really does love them, you’ll have to ask her for yourself), and some things that she loves like Onstar because Onstar helped keep her from getting into trouble with the authorities because of the things she loves in the commercial.


As I said, the above statements are only related to the video and I am in no way saying that the fabulous and fierce drag queen diva Varla Jean Merman enjoys the things from the video, Onstar or anything else. These are just my opinions of what it appears she loves in her fake commercial. We love your Varla and your commercial is fabulous!

Ok, I am sitting here, it is after 9pm and it is also St. Patricks Day.  Not only am I debating whether I should be responsible and stay home, get work done and get a few blog posts in, or go out and party my ass off, and by that I mean have one or two drinks and head home for bed.  God I hate getting old.  Well at least growing up, I’ll never be older than, well, 22 or 25 when I hit 50.  Anyways, it is weird when my friends all are getting married, some have kids and most of then can’t go out on nights like tonight like we used to.

Most of us just don’t care about the bars anymore, I have cabin fever so I am dying to go somewhere, and the ones who have kids always use the excuse that they can’t find a baby sitter.  That is the biggest load of crap on earth.  There are tons of homeless people and drug addicts you can let into your house to watch the kids for a few hours and the best part is they’ll work for scratch (yes the drug reference is intended….mirror scratch, snort, etc…) ;-) .

Anyways, I don’t buy the excuse that I can’t go out because I have kids and responsibilities now.  I can’t find anyone and I am to old for the bars.  Well hunny listen here, 1.  None of us are to old for a St. Patricks Day Cocktail 2.  Green is a fabulous color and 3.  If you use the bullsh*t excuse that you can’t find a babysitter, you obviously weren’t trying hard enough.

Anyways,this post was meant as a joke and you should never let a homeless person, a stranger or a drug addict in your house or watch your kids.  That would be plain stupid.  The only thing real in this post is that I am really dying for a cocktail and am debating heading out to the bar for a quick St. Partrick’s Day cocktail.  Not that green beer crap but a diet drink for a skinny girl or a Raspberry Vodka and Club Soda or a Michelob Ultra or a Vodka Diet.  The other drink I love but is hard to find is a vanilla vodka or regular vodka with a Diet Jones or Calorie Free Jones Soda or Calorie Free Jones Cream Soda.

Jones Soda makes a ton of really good calorie free sodas and if they have them at the store when I go, I usually buy them instead of the major brands we all know.  That also isn’t a lie.  I actually love and prefer the calorie free Jones Sodas to other leading brands and if they don’t have that then it is back to other Diet sodas.

If you don’t agree with US Politics Listen to Varla Jean Merman

So there has been a lot of issues lately around the gays.  I’ve seen it when I traveled and other Countries making fun of us for being so far behind the times with technology, Female Politicians and especially for Gay Marriage when they find out I run this blog.  The thing is you don’t have to agree with them, you don’t have to even acknowledge them and you can completely do the American thing and snub them and brag about how great our Country really is.  You can also point out all of the flaws with their Country as well.

Think about it, it is not only rude that they are ripping apart the USA when it really isn’t any of their business so why shouldn’t you be able to fight back?  It’s not rude, it is showing pride for you Country!

The other thing is that we are constantly progressing.  We have a Black President, we had a Woman run and almost win the Presidential Ticket, we had one Win the VP ticket for the Republican Ticket and even more importantly we are getting our rights in more and more States to be able to get married.

Now, suppose you aren’t the confrontational type.  You like to sit back and just have fun, especially if you are on vacation.  Why not take a different approach?

I’m personally not one for Politics and I cannot tell you the difference between any of them.  I only care about who will do what is best for us as a people and pass gay marriage.  When I’m on vacation or traveling abroad I always end up with someone ripping me apart for being an American and you know what, I’m tired of it.  I want to enjoy my flight and my vacation.  Not have someone insult me on it and try to ruin part of it so that is why I would like to share one of my very favorite solutions to this issue via one of my favorite Drag Queens, the great, the fabulous, the amazing Miss Varla Jean Merman and her solution to what happens if tempers flare while abroad because you are American.

Pearl Necklaces, all kinds and we mean all kinds

Ok, I was watching a comedy show today and one of my favorite Drag Queen Actresses Varla Jean Merman who we all remember from Girls will be Girls, Project Runway and a ton of other shows and movies sang a song all about one of my very favorite wedding things, a Pearl Necklace.
