Cork DC – Cork DC Wine Bars Reviewed

Filed under: gay travel, honeymoon, wine — Tags: , , — rollerbladerdc @ 12:14 pm

Now if you remember Washington DC about 10 years ago, 14th Street and Logan Circle were in the ghetto.  Not only was it a dangerous area, but it was dilapidated and completely disgusting to walk through.  It is amazing what a few years can do to an area.

Now apartments in Logan Circle range from the 1,300 per month to 3,000 per month and the nightlife of Logan Circle is booming for both straight people and gays.  There are thriving restaraunts, nice grocery stores like wholefoods and fun pubs like Stoney’s, Logan Tavern and Commissionary with great bar food and nightlife.  We even have Halo (which renamed itself to another name recently even though I still hate it there) which is DCs only completel dedicated Gay Lounge (You could argue 30 degrees lounge, etc… but I still consider that part of Cobalt).  Anyways, with the springing up of new restaraunts and trendy places to eat and things to do in Logan circle popped up a wine bar named Cork DC.

I went to Cork DC (Cork Wine Bar DC) the other day with my friend for his birthday and I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed.   The overall experience was absolutely fantastic, but there were a few issues I had with Cork DC and their Staff.  Lets start with the bad and end with the good.

Cork DC Address

Washington, DC 20009

I walked in and I was a bit earlier than my friend.  When I came in I was ignored by the (what I want to say is b*tch) greeter at the door with reservations.   I stood there for 5 minutes staring before she even said can I help you.  After being ignored, even after asking a question I said screw it and walked up to the bar.  Sorry but she was a real b*tch.  When I went to ask if we could get a table she gave us an attitude as well and instead of saying something friendly or even a hello, she said “Are you eating” not are you going to be having dinner, will you be ordering food, something polite, not “Are you eating?” and when we said no we were just having wine she told us no.  She also said tables are for guests eating sit at the bar.  She should have said “I’m sorry but the tables are reserved for guests who are having dinner with us, however you are more than welcome to enjoy your wine at the bar where we have appetizers (Always push an upsell or crossell) and a full selection of (ramble on for a second and smile).  The apologize and let the guests go back to the bar.  Cork had very poor service when it comes to their greeters and I highly encourage you all to complain if you end up getting that same rude b*tch at the front door of Cork Wine Bar DC.  Anyways, that was the majority of the bad with Cork Wine Bar in Washington DC.

Now for the good with Cork Wine Bar in Washington DC.

The wine selection was absolutely fabulous. Their wine menu was broken down by whites, then roses, then reds.  It also then sorts by which country the wine came from.  I wish they took it a step further and went by the sugar scale or region or varietal but hey, not everyone can be that OCD.  =0).  I stuck with the White Wines at Cork and after I realized I had about 4 glasses I thought that I should have done a flight (a three glass wine pairing that they set up across a piece of paper for you to have 3 smaller sized glasses of which ever wine color or varietal you choose).  Although the flight wouldn’t have been as satisfying as the full 4 glasses I had, maybe it would have helped me and my friends walk out of their a bit easier.

The bar tender was absolutely amazing.  not only did he joke with us, but he helped us find the perfect pairings for our tastes, describe each wine thoroughly and when we would ask for a particular kind that was on the menu and they were out of it, he knew a great substitute for it.  The bar staff at Cork Wine Bar DC is absolutely wonderful.

Not only did the Bar Staff at Cork DC know the entire selection and menu by heart and by number, they also were smart, could learn people’s pallets very fast and make perfect recommendations, but they also knew how to joke, have fun and really upsell and cross sell the menu.  Heck they got me to pay for these horrible home marinated olives.  To be fair though the olives looked amazing, but unfortunately their marinade took all the flavor out and they just tasted like olives soaked in olive oil.  No spice, seasoning, flavor etc…  Even the Kalamata Olives were bland which is very rare considering kalamata olives are normally extremely potent.

Overall I would give Cork DC 4 out of 5 Stars but only because of the wine selection and the very friendly and knowledgeable  bar staff.  The food gets a 1 out of 5 stars based on the olives and reactions I saw from other people eating.  No one was like wow on their first bite and no one I talked to really went crazy over the food.  I wish I could give a zero out of five stars but unfortunately one is the lowest number based on the front door staff.

Cork is a very fun and friendly atmosphere (Once you get past the b*tch at the door) and perfect for an anniversary, if you need something to do before dinner.  For a cocktail party or social networking event or even just for a girls night out with your friends.  It is gay friendly and straight friendly and a perfect evening out.  I will definitely be back to Cork Wine Bar DC and if the horrible b*tch greeter is there, I’ll definitely complain this time.  Cork DC is a must if you like Wine Bars and are in Washington DC.

Ok, so before I start this post, I need to say ouch.  I have been busting my butt at the gym 3 to 5 days a week and trying to diet, mostly failing, to get my fat booty back in shape.  In the spirit of pain, celebration and success of actually starting to loose weight, I could use a drink, unfortunately for me, drinks are not diet friendly, especially the good ones like cosmos, and unfortunately I haven’t read Bethany from the Real Housewives of NYC on Bravo TV’s book about skinny girl cocktails to see if she has a recipe for skinny girl cosmos so I am stuck dreaming about drinking.  So instead of diving into a fabulous bottle of chardonnay or having a cosmo before bed, I’m going to post about the next best thing.  Personalized cocktail glasses and shakers.

There is a store online that I am pretty obsessed with called Beau-Coup.com (This is a completely random link to a completely random cocktail product they sale).    I was looking through their online shop and came across some fabulous custom engraved and personalized cocktail glasses and had to share them with you.  A long time ago I remember I posted their personalized wine glasses, a post about the red and I think the white in there and a couple of you had bought the personalized wine glasses.  In this post, I wanted to show you all a few more of the customized and personalized cocktail glasses including engaved beer steins and other glasses as well as engraved cocktail shakers, and other fabulous personalized cocktail gifts that I love for everything from birthday gifts to wedding gifts and pretty much everything else in between.  Anyways, if you need a great gift idea, personalized white wine glasses, margarita glasses and martini glasses are perfect for spring and summer, personalized red wine glasses are perfect for winter and of course beer steins for fall and octoberfest.  Click any of the images or links above in this post to go to Beau-Coup and you’ll be able to buy personalized cocktail glasses and cocktail gifts for birthdays, weddings and other parties and events.

Perfect Wines for a Spring or Summer Weddings

Filed under: Spring, Summer, food, wine — Tags: , , — rollerbladerdc @ 3:14 am

Ok, I had a couple of wines over the last couple days that were above and beyond amazing.  They were also absolutely perfect for spring and summer weddings.  Neither of them were heavy or thick, neither were over powering, but both of them had so much flavor, taste, great body and color and amazing aromas.  They also had about the perfect kick alcohol wise to keep you standing but also give you enough courage to go out on the dance floor and shake your booty.

Now, even if you normally don’t like chardonnays or cabarnets, you have to try these two.  Not only are they amazing, but they are perfect for people with all pallets and tastes and can match just about any meal from Chicken to Steak to Fondue.  Anyways, here are my two favorite wine picks for Spring and Summer weddings.  (Even though Stefano Farina’s Barolos didn’t make it on this list, they were a very close call for the red choice.  The second runner up for whites was an amazing sauvignon blanc, but they also ran out of the wine so it is almost impossible to get so I didn’t include it.)

Edna Valley Vineyards Chardonnay 2006

Edna Valley Vineyards Chardonnay 2006

This is the Edna Valley Chardonnay 2006.  It comes in a yellow tinted bottle and the foil around the top is a nice spring and summer yellow to tie into the wedding season.

The wine is an amazing chardonnay and unlike most chardonnays, the Edna Valley Vineyards Chardonnay from 2006 first seems like it is going to be a medium to heavy body, but when you drink it and taste it going down your throat, it is actually extremely light and flowery.

Although I didn’t taste it as a very oaky wine, my friend Mike definitaly commented on the oaky taste so I am assuming it is there for some people.  The thing that we both loved about this 2006 Edna Valley Chardonnay though is the amazing vannila explosion that you get a few seconds after you swallow this chardonnay.   The taste of this wine is soo explosive it is insane.

We served it chilled but also let is air for about 20 to 30 minutes.  We then poured it into titanium high grade wine glasses that I got from one of the wine stores listed below and we also let the bottle sit out instead of keeping it chilling in an ice bucket.

It starts out with a nice chardonnay fruity flavor, I kept getting a hint of flowers and floral aromas when I was drinking it, but the most suprising and amazing thing about this chardonnay was the explosive vanilla flavor at the end.

It wasn’t overpowering or to strong, but it just comes out of no where and leaves this amazing taste in your mouth for a good few seconds.  Even though I normally do not like vanilla wines, this one is a must have and the taste, flavor, body, legs, aromas, bottle design, etc… make it the most amazing and seriously perfect white wine and chardonnay for spring and summer weddings.

mayacamas cabernet

mayacamas cabernet

This is probably the most fabulous and amazing cabarnet I have ever had.  Then again I am extremely partial to it since I have so many good memories that come with drinking the bottle.

The first time I had ever tried the Mayacamas Cabarnet I was with my Dad and we were finally talking after a long time of avoiding each other.  This wine always reminds me of when we were talking and found out we have a ton of things in common like wine, cooking and we actually have a lot of the same hobbies.

I remember hanging out with my friends and opening a bottle of the Mayacamas Cabarnet, pouring it through my Decanter and letting it breath, then explaining why it is important and showing them what it tastes like before it breathes and then again after to try and convert them into whinos as well.

Anyways, this wine is extremely special to me and everyone who I have ever served the Mayacamas Cabarnet to has unanimously agreed it is one of the best cabarnets and reds that they have ever tasted.  It is a bit on the pricey end for a large wedding, but if you don’t mind spending the extra money on a wine for your wedding, this is one to definitely consider, at least for the bridal party, groomsmen and your parents.

Anyways, below are a few wine stores that I have shopped from or at least seen some great wines at.  Click any of the banners below and you’ll be taken to some fabulous online wine stores and also help to keep this blog alive so I can help to make more suggesstions to help you plan the perfect wedding.
